Lingua is an app for iPhone and Android for building your own language — its letters, its words, its grammar — and writing to other people in it. The app is made by Tokine, in Tokyo. This page describes what Lingua stores, where it is stored, and how you can delete it.
Lingua shows no ads, and contains no third-party analytics. We do not sell your information.
You can create an account with an email address and a password, or by signing in with Apple or Google.
The app does not keep your password. It is sent to Supabase, our server provider, and what remains on your device is a sign-in token.
Lingua's server and database are provided by Supabase. These are the records Lingua keeps there:
| Profile | Your account: identifier, handle (@name), display name, profile picture, and the date it was created. It also carries a mark saying whether the account answers reports, which we set and you cannot. |
|---|---|
| Languages | Each language you make: its name, the licence you choose for it, and its dates. |
| Language contents | What a language is made of: words, letters, writing systems, and the rest. |
| Posts | What you post: the text, photos and audio in it, and the prompt it answers, if any. |
| Drafts | Posts you have not sent. Only you can read your drafts. |
| Saved searches | Search terms you have saved. |
| Reactions | Likes and reposts. |
| Follows | Who you follow. |
| Blocks | Who you have blocked. |
| Reports | Reports you send about a post or a person. |
| Prompts | The daily prompt everyone is invited to write to. |
Two further records, quotes and publications, exist in the database but are not in use yet.
Lingua keeps its own copy of nearly everything on the phone, so that it works with no signal. The server is where these things live; the phone is where they are made and read.
Lingua is a place where people write to each other, so the things you publish — your handle and display name, your posts, the languages you share, and who you follow — are visible to other people using the app. Your drafts are not.
The photos and audio in a post are stored openly. Anyone holding the address of one can read it — including someone who is not using Lingua, and from outside the app. The text of a post is not stored this way; the photos and audio are.
You can delete your account from inside the app, and deleting it deletes everything. Your profile, your languages, your posts and drafts, your saved searches, reactions, follows and blocks are removed. This cannot be undone.
One thing is kept: the reports you have sent about other people remain, with your name taken off them. A report is a record about somebody else, and deleting your account would otherwise withdraw every report you had ever made.
You can also ask us to delete it without the app. Write to lingua@tokinets.com from the address you signed in with, or tell us your handle, and we delete the account and everything above within 30 days.
Lingua loads some of its typefaces from Google's font servers each time it starts, so your IP address reaches Google at that moment. Nothing else is sent, and this is not analytics.
Lingua's paid plans are in-app purchases through Apple's App Store on iPhone and Google Play on Android. Apple or Google handles the payment. We never receive or store your card or payment details.
Lingua is for people aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly keep information about anyone under 13, and if we find that we do, we delete it together with the account. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 13 has an account, write to us at the address below.
